What on earth is anki?

Anki is a digital flashcard App. You can get it on your computer, phone, tablet, whatever. And you use it to help lock things away in your memory for good. It is designed so that you will never forget the things you are learning, as long as you keep at it over the years. But the good thing is that the longer you go with it, the less and less you need to use it.

Why is it so good?

Anki uses 2 major techniques that work together for incredibly powerful memorisation:

Active Recall Testing

This is just a fancy way of saying that you need to answer a question. Now although that sounds incredibly basic, it is in contrast to hearing someone else answer the question, or reading the answer somewhere. When you recall the information it strengthens your memory. When you get it wrong, it tells you that you need to review that question again, meaning that info won't fall out of your head.

Spaced Repetition

What Anki does for us is manage how regularly we need to remember the flashcards. When we get it correct, it stores it away for a while before bringing it back up again. And then if you get it correct the next time, it stores it away for longer. This helps to cement the thing you're trying to learn into your memory. If you get the answer incorrect, it will give it to you again sooner and you will need to build it back up.

Anki and kids?

I do think it is possible to use Anki with young kids, but it will be easier and more beneficial the older the kids get. When they can read, they will be able to do their Anki on their own which is a huge win. But the novelty of having it on a phone or tablet might motivate your preschoolers to get on board.

You are also able to have multiple users on your Anki account. This means that you can have one for each member of the family which is great because you can all have your own individual progress.

How much does it cost?

Great question. The computer version is free!! So is the Android version. The iOS version will cost you $39 for lifetime use, which is pricy. But as it is most easy to use on phone or tablet, this is so incredibly worth it, it isn't funny!

Getting Started

There are 4 steps to take in order to get going with Anki:

Step 1: Create an account

Go to the ankiweb website to sign up for an account. You will need to verify your email to be able to use it.

Step 2: Download the computer app

Go to the Anki App webpage and download the computer version (for Mac, Windows or Linux). Log into your account.

Step 3: Import Decks

Click on the "Import File" button on the bottom right. Then select the file you have downloaded from either the Pack page or the Verse page from parents for eternal life. It should add the deck to Anki for you.

Step 4: Download the phone/tablet app

Again, go to the Anki App webpage, but this time click on iPhone/Android to download the appropriate App. Once you've got this, sync it and you should have your decks on it. Sync regularly and it doesn't matter where you use Anki - it will be updated on all your devices.
